Descanso Beach Bar Catalina
A Piece of Paradise With Drinks on the Beach

tLA's out there somewhere, but who cares with this view at Descanso Beach
The tall, rum-filled drink is hand-delivered to you right on the sand, the cute waitress presenting it with a smile.
This is one of the few places in all of California where this happens, where is it legal to drink on the beach. This little piece of paradise is a small spot on Catalina Island outside of Avalon called Descanso Beach Club.

Relaxing on the beach before having an island drink.
Just past the casino (which is not a gambling casino, by the way), Descanso beacons for those who know it. This is where to go for a tan, to lay out on the sand and enjoy the atmosphere and flavor of Catalina. Los Angeles may be only 26 miles across the Pacific, but mentally it's a million miles from Descanso.
The bar is all outdoor, located on a sunny deck with a roof over the drink-pouring area. There are tables overlooking the Pacific and a small beach for sunning. Beach sounds play softly over the loudspeakers.

A group of fun people enjoy their Descanso Destroyers.
For those who dare, there's the Descanso Destroyer, a juice-and-rum non-frozen concoction that has a 151 floater ($7).
To be sure, there's more to Descanso Beach Club than drinks. It's a great spot for snorkeling (though it takes navigating over rocks to get to the water) and kayaking. In 2010, a zip line was added.
It also serves food – appetizers are popular and a new dinner menu has been introduced – and on Fridays and Saturdays in the summertime, people can bring their own food to cook on a 25-foot grill. Descanso provides the condiments and sides and salads. This is called the BBQ Under The Stars.
It underwent a makeover in 2010 that added fire rings and private cabana rentals on the beach.
