The Soggy Dollar Bar!
Home of the Virgin Islands Famous 'Painkiller'

There's not much to the Soggy Dollar Bar itself but the Painkillers are killer.

"We kill our Pain at Soggy Dollar..."
- Singer Eric Stone

Drop the hook, jump off the rail and head to the white-sand beach.

The target: The Soggy Dollar Bar.

So named because the bills arrive wet after the swim to shore, this small shack with a tin roof is a British Virgin Islands legend, a must-stop for every sailor and "party cat" that island hops through the BVIs.

Painkiller Recipe

• Dark Rum
• 4 parts pineapple juice
• 1 pint orange juice
• 1 part Coco Lopez ( sweetened cream of coconut)
• Top with fresh-ground nutmeg

It's located at White Bay in Yost Van Dyke and with no dock, people must anchor and swim to the bar. (Well, a few take dingys, and it's not a bad idea for the trip back to the boat after a few hours here.)

It has a few plastic tables and chairs, ring toss game, a hammock and palm trees. Because people swim to the bar, their dollars are soggy when they arrive and a clothesline hangs above the bar to dry them.

But what it has most of all is the Painkiller, a drink heavy in rum that makes the Soggy Dollar as much of a BVIs "must visit" spot as The Baths and Sandy Spit.

The signature drink in the signature Soggy Dollar cup.

The Painkiller is served in 12-ounce Soggy Dollar plastic cups and people proudly stack them as they build up their collection. Many a conversation has started at the bar with strangers, and best friends are made in these moments (if only temporary).

Inside and out of the Soggy Dollar Bar.

There's a funny thing about those Painkillers (is it the sprinkle of nutmeg???) that makes people have not just one one or two, but three, four... And all a sudden, whatever is happening elsewhere in the world washes out to sea. For you see, the Soggy Dollar is a million miles away from any worry, cares or responsibilities.

The Soggy Dollar Bar IS the British Virgin Islands.

For fuel, it serves breakfast, (9-10 a.m.), lunch (chicken Roti and conch fritters are two of the most popular items) and dinner (4 courses by candlelight and by this time all the party people have departed).
