Favorite Spots From a Condo Owner

A fishing vessel moves out of Destin' Harbor in search of seafood.

Destin, the little fishing village on the Gold Coast of Florida's Panhandle, offers a lot to its many visitors.

And there's plenty to do in Destin besides fishing. There's hanging out and tanning on those beautiful bright-white beaches that are so soft the feet squeak when you walk on them (and they remain beautiful bright-white even after the Gulf Oil Spill disaster).

There's boating and sailing, shopping (plenty of shopping) and those staples of any Florida beach, go-karts and miniature golf.

There's also eating, and lots of it.. Destin several fine restaurants, ranging from seafood to Italian to comfort "down home" food.

SEAFOOD

• Bayau Bill’s, 4748 U.S. Hwy 98 E, Santa Rosa Beach, FL. It’s worth a few mile’s drive for some of the best seafood along the Gulf.

• Pompano Joe’s, 2237 Scenic Gulf Hwy. One of the best and most popular seafood restaurants along Scenic Gulf Hwy.

• Backporch, 1740 Scenic Gulf Hwy. Another of the great seafood places that overlook the Gulf along this highway.

• AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar, 116 E. Harbor Blvd. Located in the heart of the Destin Harbor, you can enjoy a drink in the open bar and watch the fishing fleet come in each evening.

• The Lucky Snapper, 76 Harbor Blvd. Located near AJ’s, they serve the best cheese biscuits for you to munch on while your order is being prepared.

ITALIAN

• Grazie’s, Unfortunately, the best Italian restaurant in Destin is now closed. We're looking for suggestions for a replacement. But what place can duplicate that baked garlic dip and homemade bread??

COMFORT "DOWN HOME"

• Callahan’s Restaurant & Deli, 791 Harbor Blvd. You may have to ask directions, but this is where the locals eat. Everything from pot roast and liver and onions to prime rib and top-grade steaks. You’re welcome to select your steak from the meat counter.

BREAKFAST

• Another Broken Egg. Several different locations in Destin and Sandestin. Plan to spend some time (and cash) at breakfast, but you won’t need any lunch…and only a light dinner.

PIZZA

• Jordano’s in Sandestin. They deliver or will have your order ready if you call ahead.
