LA's Best Burger Is By the Beach
It's at Ercoles, a Manhattan Dive Bar

It doesn't get any better for a burger than Erc's in Manhattan Beach, CA.

It's as juicy as a Mel Gibson phone coversation, as thick as Pete Carroll's wallet.

It's the cheeseburger at Ercoles, a dive bar in Manhatttan Beach, CA. And it's the Best Burger in Los Angeles.

(Why is is that the best burgers seem to always be in dive bars? See Pier 15 in San Rafael, CA, and Rocky's in Pacific Beach, CA, for other examples)

This is a 10-napkin, conversation-stopping burger. Juices flow out of it with each bite. Nobody talks when the eat an Erc's burger. Instead, they make mumbling sounds like, "mmmm. Ohhhh. Ahhhhh."

When they finish, there's always some type of acknowldgement, such as, "man that's a great burger!" Then they take a gulp of their beer.

Erc's – as it's known to locals – gets its meat from next door at the Manhattan Market, one of the best such spots in L.A. So the beef is of a very high quality.

It is placed on a small, juice-soaking bun that clings just so to the meat, making every bite something to savor. Too many places that claim to have great burgers ruin them by concealing it with gigantic bread. Just down from Erc's, Simmzy's is an excellent example of just that – it has a good enough patty but covers it with a bun the size of a circus tent.

Here, they pile on the toppings – lettuce, tomato, onion, with huge slice of Dill pickle on the side – the way the men pile on the pickup lines here on weekend nights. There are no fries, but instead come with a bag of chips. Becauase the burger is so filling, fries would only go to waste.

Of course, beer goes great with burgers, so wash it down with a cold Bud.

Price: $6.50. Two for one on Wednesdays, eat-in only and two drinks are required.

Locaiton: 1101 North Manhattan Ave. (310) 372-1997
