Polly's on the Pier, Redondo Beach
It's old, simple and creeky. No, it's not your grandmother. But, like your grandmother, Polly's on the Pier takes care of you. Polly's on the Pier is a small restaurant in Redondo Beach, CA. It serves breakfast and lunch and because its location is on the small wooden pier and not the larger horseshoe pier attached to the International Boardwalk, it's off the beaten path. You have to know about it to know Polly's.
It's comfort food, the kind that is most commonly found in the Midwest or the South. Except it comes with a view of the Pacific Ocean. Polly's is like an old-fashioned diner in a spectacular Southern California setting. For those who arrive by bike, it's a brief "thump, thump" on the aged pier planks with the hope that one of the four plastic outdoor tables is open. If not, it's wise to wait. As an alternative, there is a counter and indoor seating with windows offering a peek at the Pacific (even the men's bathroom has an ocean view, out of a small window with a wire cage). The large, laminated menu shows omelettes, pork chops, country fried steak, New York steak and a triple-decker turkey club. Sandwiches and burgers come with a nice Southern side that's hard to find in California: Cole slaw. The menu also has a Redondo twist, seafood with shrimp and real (not imitation) crab,
Breakfast is served until closing and includes eggs benedict ($10.75), spicy Huevos Rancheros ($8.50), an old-fashioned breakfast (two eggs, two strips of bacon or sausage, two hotcakes or french toast, $8.25) and omelettes that include Polish and Italian sausage, seafood and Ortega chili ($9.50-$11.75). The portions are midwestern and southern-sized, too; be prepared to take home leftovers. Breakfasts are served with toast, muffin or biscuit and gravy (good!) and hash browns. Oddly, while the omelette and biscuit are both great, the hash browns are bland and lacking in flavor. This doesn't seem to make any sense since everything else is so tasty. But with so much of the other good stuff, it's easy to ignore that side dish. Frankly, the California physique doesn't need it anyway. All this is soaked in with a calm, beautiful view of the King Harbor jetty. Occasionally, a Hispanic family with fishing poles will briefly obstruct the view, but sitting out in the sun with a satisfying meal is a totally relaxing experience. Unless you want to pay by credit card; like any good diner, it's a cash or personal check only here. Polly's on the Pier: Redondo Beach Fishing Pier @ Redondo Beach Marina. 233 N.
