Ready, Set, Lunch May be Best Special in L.A.

Could this be the best lunch deal in the South Bay? Perhaps, even (gasp!) in all of L.A.!?

Considering the quality of food and the location, the number of places that could top Zinc – the restaurant at the upscale Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, CA – is far less crowded than the 405. Even when it's not rush hour.

How's this for a deal: A starter, entree, side and a drink – including beer or wine – for $15. PRICE UPDATE: In August of 2011, the price went up to $16 and it only includes a non-alcoholic drink. Add a beer or wine and the total rises to $20.

The bistro steak's soy sauce cover gives it a tasty and unique flavor.

That's right. $15. There's no hidden cost(s), no extras (unless one wants extras, like dessert or another drink) and no fine print. It's $15. The only thing added is the tax. Heck, a single martini at the bar in the evening can cost that much.

And it's good. Delicious, actually. Surfside Sam went on a recent sunny day and had the blackened fish tacos, which were outstanding. A friend had (for the second time) the bistro steak while several other diners aournd us went for the pizza.

All told, there are eight entree choices, which is quite a remarkable selection given the budget price. Normally, one would expect three or four when a restaurant of this quality puts on this kind of special.

The Zinc chopped salad is highly recommended as the starter and when it comes to the side dish, Shade's sister in Manhattan Beach (Rock 'n Fish) makes an incredible mac 'n cheese. Surfside Sam, however, was feeling healthy on this particular day and opted for the green beans, which were packed with flavor.

The portions are average, but adequate. You'll walk away from here satisfied, not stuffed.

The Zinc salad is the perfect starter for the bargain lunch.

The beverage is included, too, which can often add as much as $3 to any lunch tab. And the fact that wine or any of Shade's draught beers – Surfside Sam had the tasty Kona Longboard Lager – are part of the package takes this special over the top.

The first-class setting, on a beach-casual but refined patio, make Shade a top choice for lunch among the many places in downtown Manhattan Beach.

It's so nice here that it's easy to get tempted to order a couple more beers or glasses of wine and stay until those martini prices match that of the entire lunch.
