The Jewel of San Diego
A Look at La Jolla

La Jolla is a real jewel north of San Diego.
The scenic spots of San Diego go all up and down the coast, and one of the most spectacular is a real jewel.
The small seaside town of La Jolla – which means, appropriately enough, "the Jewel" – is just that indeed. It has multi-million homes overlooking the Pacific, a cozy cove, a botique town on the top of a cliff a nude beach, and wildlife that has created a wild local debate.

T La Jolla park is ideal for picnics or just taking in the the Pacific.
La Jolla is the first jewel on the route
for those heading north from San Diego. It's signature spot is La Jolla Cove, a super place for protected snorkeling. Heavy in kelp and sealife, it's away from the currents of the Pacific and La Jolla's most highly popular activity. The water can be chilly even in the summer months; in the winter a wetsuit is an absolute must.

The most popular activity is snorkeling at La Jolla Cove.
The cove is just around the bend from either one of LaJ olla's biggest tourist attractions or one of its biggest nuisances, depending on one's point of view. The "Casa," was once a children's beach and swimming area, but now its the hangout for a big population of seals and sea lions. It's a local controversy whether to try and chase them away or let them stay.

There are several spectacular ocean views in La Jolla.
Sea lions or not, there is no arguing the view from the grassy area above the cliff, or walk down the trails and wade in the water along Coast Boulevard.
Free street parking is available, though the spaces can seem really
sparse in the summer.
La Jolla also has a buff sunbathing area called Black's
Beach.
The quaint, lovely downtown has shops and restaurants concentrated around Prospect Street. There are also galleries and a couple of botique hotels. Local hangouts are Jose's, a small bar that's
been there forever; Monzou and George's at the top of
the Cove and the sports bar Moondoogie's.
In the summer, there are Concerts by the Sea from June thru the first of Sept. By the way, La Jolla is pronounced "La Hoya."
