The popular Monterey Bay Aquarium prides itself on showcasing sea life from the abundance of the immediate Monterey Bay. It's an approach that has worked; its sea otter exhibit, for example, is one of the most popular place for visitors at any aquarium.

But one large area has been left somewhat unexplored, the deep ocean not far from the aquarium itself. So the aquarium has expanded its Outer Bay galleries to what is now called The Open Sea. It's three areas featuring deep-see jellyfish, sandbar sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, tunas and sharks perhaps, even, the occasional Great White.

"The open sea is a dynamic place where life is in constant motion," said Senior Exhibit Developer Jacki Tomulonis. "The Open Sea galleries bring our visitors into the heart of this extraordinary environment through transformed live exhibits, new multimedia experiences and surprising artistic elements."

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located at the end of Cannery Row at the intersection of David Ave., in Monterey. Tickets are $29.95. It is open 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., in the summer months and on holidays, 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m., on summer weekends, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m., in the winter.
